Outside

Installation & performance for an immersion in the world of memories

Outside is an immersive, hybrid and protean project, bringing together the mediums of performance and installation through video mapping and sculpture activation. Whether in movement or contemplation, this magnetic project takes us into an inner, visceral world where time is suspended.

Entirely woven from video cassette tapes, the project is based on an organic bodily state, a metaphor of the dissociation symptom.

On this shimmering installation is projected a metaphorical and poetic mapping of the reminiscence of memories. The reflective work questions the power of darkness, hidden memories, and the light that generates them.

Different layers of reading are then possible, for while Nawelle speaks of hidden memories, her personal research is based on amnesia.

In a traumatic event, amnesia is a protective system triggered by the brain to block out the violent event. By “putting aside” the violence suffered, the brain controls the dose of lethal stress triggered by the hippocampus, enabling the emotional load to be borne. Body and mind then agree to dissociate. One protecting the other.

Subsequently, snatches of memory appear spontaneously, intrusively and incomprehensibly in everyday life. They’re like shimmering, volatile dust. They are flashbacks that sometimes constrain the body, sometimes the mind. Images that are unreadable until the day a sound, a smell, a word allows the memory to reappear, rehabilitating the event in its context. The amnesia is lifted.

It’s this unsettling moment between memory, dream and reality that she’d like to explore through the lighting and poetic projection of a mapping on the woven piece.
